Desktop Virtualisation (VDI)

Many IT environments consist of a collection of servers and desktop PC’s. Core business data is generally stored on servers and accessed by programs which are installed on each staff members desktop PC, such as Word, Excel and other core business applications.

In a virtualised desktop environment staff typically operate from basic thin terminals. The thin terminals have limited functionality and are used to log each staff member into a server based Virtual Desktop IT environment. Staff are provided with a set of standard business applications and corporate configuration based on policies defined within the IT environment, depending on the requirements of their position within the organisation.

Key Benefits

  • Programs and configuration are departmentalised and easily deployed as a standard to each applicable organisational unit. This can assist with standardisation throughout your organisation, compliance and policy enforcement.
  • Lower IT support and maintenance cost – No need to support, maintain and upgrade local PC hardware.
  • Business continuity is ensured as disaster recovery plan covers not just server data, but also end user configuration and programs.
  • Fast performance for all users, no more staff using older slow computers which are ‘Due for replacement shortly’.
  • Replacing a PC or setting up a new staff member with the organisations standard set of applications and configuration takes minutes not hours.
  • Staff will never be waiting around for a PC problem to be fixed.
  • Staff have the freedom to access their desktop and information from any thin client or PC, including any work or home PC. Allowance to roam is controlled by security policy.
  • Strong protection against data security as data can be restricted from leaving the server environment.

Virtual Desktop environments provide significant benefits for organisations they are suited to, however are not always the best option for all organisations.
